how to question how do i know what kind of rafters to put in a ceiling that will be walked on?

builiding into the garage adding more space in my living room i know how to build walls but the roof/ceiling is becoming a question of unanswered questions want to be able to put storage on top of the ceiling so how do i support the wieght of boxes plus my self. And also i have a 20ft ceiling in garage and dropping 10ft to add the storage what kind of bracings do i need

  1. 2 x 6's. if they're 2 x 4's, you might be out of luck. you can get some plywood to lay down to distribute the weight a little better but 2x4's are barely good enough to hang drywall from.
  2. When you get a permit for this job you can ask the inspector. They will look it up in their code book. Just make sure you tell them what you want to do up there. That or get an engineer to have a look and draw you up some drawings. It will say on it what is required. DO NOT do this without a permit and inspections. If that ceiling every came down and hurt someone, you'll be on your own for the lawsuits without permits AND inspections.
  3. it all depends on the span.99 % of the time you got to gowith 2 x 10s in an attic with a min of 1/2 inch plywood.
