how do i install overhead ceiling storage in my garage? I can't seem to find any studs even with a deep scanning stud finder.
dinghy storage - I want to suspend one from a garage ceiling? Has anyone got any experience / tips and suggestions on the best way to suspend a mirror dinghy from a garage ceiling. I'm looking to store a mirror in my garage and the obvious place is to hang it from the ceiling (its very stong and will take the weight). I guess I will need some kind of strapping and some king of hoist to get it to the correct position... Someone must have done this already.
How do you strengthen ceiling joists in a garage to support overhead storage? Exist gable roof with 2x8 rafters 16" oc. 2x10 joists 16" oc -24' span.
Do ceiling joists in a garage need to be strenghtened to support overhead storage? Gable roof with 2x8 rafters 16" oc. 2x10 ceiling joists 16" oc, 24' span. I want to nail 5/8" plywood down on top of ceiling joists to store christmas decorations, kids toys, large bulky items. Roof pitch is 5/12 so usable storage is limited to midspan of 2x10.
What do I need to check for or do to convert attic above garage for storage? I have a roof pitch that goes from about 3' to 20' above my garage, which allows me to stand erect in most of the area. I want to convert this to an attic storage. I have 2 x 8 ceiling joists running the width of a double garage. I would like to be able to put a lot of weight up there without having to worry about it. Would a ceiling support running down the middle of the garage with posts at each end be enough?
Garage needs storage. I would like to frame a portion of the ceiling with 2x8x20 across the span. ? I think this is a little long but can I double the 2x8 to make it work? Or will I have to go to a 2x10x20 for the span? I planned the storage above the top plate, there is an issue with the roof line will not allow due to the 4/12 pitch of the roof. I will have to cut down in either case. I will have 2x4 rafters at 16oc. Using Doug Fir, 1/2" plywood surface and maybe sheet rock for the lid. The storage is planned above a sectional garage door in a open space under the roof. Comments? The garage door has an opener and it does open on the top. This door has a 7’ span when it opens. My plan is to use the space above the door for now. I have to move a laundry area before I can make more storage on the opposite end. It seems that you never have enough storage. Interior garage roof truss storage loading? We have a 2 car garage with (2x4) trusses and no ceiling. How much (storage) load is safe to put on the horizontal members? What about hanging things from the roof members?
What is a good way to store plywood in your garage? We have a bunch of pieces of plywood that our for our windows in case of a hurricane that are taking up a TON of space leaning against the wall in our garage. I'm concerned about them warping for one thing but also that they could fall over very easily. Is there a good way to store these? They're so big that I (unfortunately) don't think one of those hang-from-the-ceiling storage things will work.
Possum in my garage ceiling, HELP!? Somehow a possum got into the ceiling of our garage. It appears that it crawled onto a large storage cabinet and then into the insulation (there is only insulation -- no dry wall as its only partially finished). We just moved to the "country," so we didn't think this would be a problem. It keeps knocking out insulation and going through all our stuff! What can we do? I think we can borrow a trap tomorrow animal control, but I'm afraid its made its way into the ceiling of the house & I don't know what to do! PS- He is hiding so unfortunately chasing him out isn't an option. We don't have a gun, either.

I'm framing an existing garage area, now it's time for the ceiling, do I use 2 x 4 or 2 x 6's? There are no floors on top the bedroom and bathroom I am framing in, there is the existing roof of the garage (that's staying put) So really, no one will be walking on top. However, it might be used as storage. So, can I use 2 x 4's or should I use 2 x 6's? Thanks
Want to put ceiling and insulation in garage? Hello, I just finished putting insulation and walls in my unfinished, unattached garage. Now to help keep the heat in and make it look better, I want to put a ceiling and some R19 up. My question is, what building material would be best for the ceiling and also, can I even do this because its made of 2x6's running a 15' span at 48" on center. I know I would have to add wood to keep anything I put up from sagging, but will the construction be strong enough to hold all of that up and some storage also? Thanks in advance!
How do I install a curtain rod that will hide a floor to ceiling bookcase? I'm moving into a smaller apartment and I'm trying to be creative about storage space. My solution is to use a cheap bookcase from my parent's garage and cover it with a curtain. I figure that I can hang the curtain rod from the 8" ceiling but my challenge is how to cover the 24" sides. I basically need a rod that is shaped like |_________|. Do they make that?
how far apart are ceiling joist suppose to be? I'm trying to hang Hiloft storage shelves in garage. Having a hard time finding joist even with a stud finder. any suggestions
Install flooring and pull down ladder over a grarage? I have a bunch of boxes in trusses over my garage. The ceiling has open 2X4 trusses set on 24" centers. I would like to put down a simple flooring in the main open area and a pull down ladder. This would be used just for light storage such as Christmas decorations. The garage is a 2 Car garage. Is this safe for light storage? Do I need to re-enforce the trusses under where I'm adding the storage area?
I live in Los Angeles, can my apt. manager force me to move my stuff out of my storage? Upon move in, she said it is ok to use the storage above my assigned parking space. Everyone in the complex has such a storage. Now she has posted signs on everyones storage and apt. door saying the storages must be empty by a certain date. Is this legal, also one garage is occupied by a painter who has all types of paint and other materials hanging form the walls and ceiling. I dont think she gave him notice. PLEASE CITE LAWS regarding your anwers because I want to see if I have any legal backing on this issue.
Cluttered Home A Fire Hazard? I know a woman who is in her 60's and is a total packrat! This woman has been collecting pointless objects for decades. She owns a big house, yet every single room is cluttered. Some rooms are used strictly for storage (3 rooms filled to the ceiling with boxes), but all rooms are absolutely cluttered. Her attic is stuffed so full of junk, her garage as well, she has run out of space so there are boxes in the hall! all her 3 sheds are full as well. It is a fire hazard is it not? I tried to explain the danger but she shrugs it off as though she's the senior and therefore correct. What would the city/fire department do if they knew about this? I worry not just about the consequences she may face from them but that the house will catch fire someday. Help me know what she faces and what I can do to help? Thanks all!
Buying our first house, need advice...? My wife and I are looking at a foreclosure that has a pool, fenced backyard, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 car garage, storage shed, and a fireplace. The house only has county taxes and the bank is asking $88,000. We had a house inspection and found some problems. We will need: a new furnace, AC, garbage disposal, refrigerator, front and back door, carpet, tile in the bathroom, 2 ceiling fans, interior paint job, washer, and a dryer. We know a lot of work is needed, but the house is in a great neighborhood next to a great school and is the perfect size for a starter house. We live in an apartment that has had shootings and fights, so we want to leave. A new house starts at $105,000 and have city and county taxes which are about $175 a month. County taxes are only about $50 a month We can get the fridge, washer, and doors at wholesale prices through a friend, and know someone who will give us a discount on carpet. After all of these factors, should we get this house Right now the house appraises for $115,000
Are you a clutter-bug...? I have an aunt that is really bad. She can barely open the doors to 5 of the 6 bedrooms. Her 3 car garage is completely full to the ceiling. She has 3 rental storage buildings full of junk. A two year old Nissan Maxima completely full of junk. My uncle almost died when a 14 ft. pile of junk fell on him when he was trying to find the remote. Oh I almost forgot, the attics and basement are completely full to the ceiling too. When you open the door to the basement, there's nothing but a wall of junk behind the door. I just wish I had some pictures of that.

Regarding wood and electric forces? Currently, I store most of my recorded CDs, DVDs, and other optical discs inside of a large wardrobe (instead of using it to keep clothes) which is located on the second floor of the house, in an area above the garage. I had a couple of concerns regarding this method of storage. I have seen firsthand that notebook paper and printer paper will become brittle and yellowed over the course of several years and can also discolour objects around them. I was wondering if WOOD would also emit/release acid over time and discolour objects kept inside of something such as a wardrobe? It seems unlikely considering how much of what is around is actually made of wood, and the fact that wardrobes are DESIGNED to hold clothing, which are most susceptible to discolouring caused by paper acid. I wanted to make sure that storing discs inside of an enclosed, wooden area was safe, although if I think about it, most entertainment centers are made of wood and come built with storage sectors for DVDs and the like. The other thing that I noticed recently was that most garages have an electronic device that hangs from the ceiling (it opens and closes the door(s)). Because this device is located below the ceiling of the garage, it means that it's also located below where my discs are stored. I once heard someone say that a strong electric force could "damage" the data layer of recorded discs, but I am unsure of the validity of the claim. So I guess what I'm asking is, are electronic forces harmless to optical discs as magnetic fields are, or is there truth to the claim and might the device in the garage be an issue due to where it's positioned? Thanks in advance if you can address this concern!

What would you do in this situation? Ok, I'm 37 weeks pregnant and living with my boyfriend and his parents. He's working but not making enough money for us to move out yet. We don't have anywhere else to stay because my family lives 300 miles away. Here's the deal, his parents are letting us stay in their "family room" it was the garage. They never had anyone fix it right. There is only electricity through an extension cord, the walls were put up themselves so there are big gaps close to the ceiling. There are no vents out here so the only source of heat is a space heater. This room also doubles as extra storage for his mom and an extra freezer. They refuse to put up another door to give us some privacy. It needed new carpet because they have about 12 cats and his mom used to let them roam around out here...cat pee galore! Instead of taking up the old carpet and getting someone to put down new, they just bought some scraps and laid it over the top!! I'm trying to make the best of the situation but it's getting harder every day. Yesterday I went off on my boyfriends sister (who is 25, has a good job, college degree and mooches off of her parents still). She decided to barge out here without knocking, threw a bunch of dirty towels on top of my clothes and threw some shoes out here. She slammed the door. So I went and threw all that crap right back in the living room. She came out again and asked why I did that. I said this is not a laundry room, this is my bedroom and I don't want your dirty towels out here. I shouldn't have to do your laundry, you're a grown woman. So she stomped off. Now my boyfriends entire family is mad at me. They won't talk to me and every time I come in the room they leave. I'm sick of this crap. I'm getting ready to have a baby I shouldn't have to deal with this To those of you who gave real answers thanks. To the others who are completely mean and rude...you can all just FUCK OFF! Obviously you do not know the whole story. You have no idea what my life is like so get off of your pedastal.
